At MLK Montessori, we strongly believe that parent involvement is the key to our students’ success and, for this reason, offer numerous opportunities for families to participate in the life of the school. One way that families may choose to engage with their students’ learning is by joining our Parent Advisory Council (‘PAC’), which meets regularly with MLK staff to conceive, plan, and implement family engagement activities. We are thrilled that, under the direction of Keba McMullen (our new Administrative Coordinator), more parents than ever are participating in our PAC, and they have been working diligently to plan several exciting fall activities!
On Halloween, MLK Montessori students participated in the school’s annual ‘Trunk or Treat’ event at United Methodist Church. Staff and friends of the school look forward to passing out candy, and students look forward to showing off their costumes (and, of course, receiving treats)! Each year, it’s a great way for families to connect, have fun, and celebrate their students. This year for the first time, the PAC will be projecting kids’ movies on the side of an MLK school bus to enhance the entertainment!
On November 9, the PAC hosted its first ever “Fall Fest.” At this exciting new event, families feasted on soup (there were several soups competing in our ‘cook-off’) popcorn, apple cider, hot cocoa, and s’mores! There were also free pumpkins, dozens of games, and even horse and wagon rides!
Families were also given the opportunity to stop in a visiting dental bus. Students received free checkups and fluoride treatments; Mathew 25 presented a dental hygiene video and passed out goodie bags with toothpaste, toothbrushes, and flossing sticks; and the Fort Wayne Chapter of the Links, Inc. gave students two-minute timers, fresh fruit, and water! Everyone who attended Fall Fest really enjoyed the event, and we’re very grateful for our PAC’s hard work!
Finally, on November 26, our staff and PAC will once again be working together to host our school’s annual Family Feast. At Faith United Methodist Church, students and their loved ones will enjoy a delicious spread of traditional Thanksgiving foods, including turkey, mashed potatoes, and rolls. The Family Feast is always a fantastic way to express gratitude while kicking off the holiday season, and we are always thankful to everyone who joins us!
