At MLK Montessori School, we teach our young students to be resilient in an ever-changing world. We also teach them that learning can happen anywhere! Therefore—even though our school is temporarily closed in compliance with the state-wide effort to slow the spread of COVID-19—our resilient and dedicated staff have been working hard to ensure that MLK students can continue to learn at home!
First, our teachers prepared take-home packets for students. Packets included a list of free educational resources that parents can access at home as well as a variety of educational materials. For example, packets included ideas for hands-on math activities that parents can help children complete using everyday household objects!
Each student also received 2-4 free books to take home. With public libraries currently closed, it’s more important than ever to ensure that our young learners have access to age-appropriate reading materials to stimulate their imagination and encourage emerging reader skills.
Finally, this year, 15 of our students are receiving free speech therapy services. To ensure that the progress these students have made can continue during their time at home, our speech therapist, Toni, has prepared individual take-home materials for each student receiving services and is also arranging Skype speech therapy sessions.
Currently, our school is scheduled to be closed through April 13. Should this be extended, our staff will continue to find innovative ways to support our wonderful students and their families.
